Kimana Ranch
Near Amboseli National Park lies a 25,000 hectare Masai group ranch called “Kimana/Tikondo.” In 1994 a section of this was demarcated to become the Kimana community Wildlife Sanctuary. Elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, giraffe and plains game are found here and hippo frequent the wetlands area. The kimana ranch is the perfect Kenya tour destination in the shadows of mt. Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro camp
This is a small and rustic hosted Kenya tour camp. Five tents are well spread out under huge acacia trees near a running stream which is sometimes home to hippo. A central mess and dining tent is near the hippo pool and a lookout affords views of Kilimanjaro and is a popular spot for early morning tea or sundowners.
Tents have ensuite hot showers and flushing toilets. Lighting is solar powered. Activities that can be enjoyed here include guided game walks and tracking, night game drives, game drives in Kimana, Amboseli or chyulu, fly Kenya tour camping in the area and some excellent bird shooting. Game drives, park entrances, and transfers from the local airstrip are included in the price.
Kimana hotel
This undistinguished Kenya tour lodge located between Amboseli National Park and the chyulu Hills. Catering mainly to tour groups from the coats, it has 112 double or triple rooms in several wooden units crowded together in a small garden/parking area. However, the attractive bar/dining room is light and airy, with the lounge and terrace overlooking a waterfall. There is a swimming pool.
Kimana Leopard camp Ltd
A cut-rate tented kenya tour camp for tour groups, this kenya tour camp is on the river. The tents are gnome-sized with metal beds and flush toilets. Signs abound warning guests to “watch out for leopard” and that “guests must pay for breaking furniture”!? A leopard is baited nightly.
Chyulu Hills
The chyulu Hills are a beautiful rolling ridge of volcanic mountains, dating back four or five centuries. This makes them some of the youngest mountains in the world. On the eastern side of the range is the black shetani lava flow, an evil-looking wasteland of lava rock created when the chyulu were born. The lava flow is near the chyulu gate of Tsavo National Park West. The chyulu Hills Mountains have the best green lush glades in Kenya. The young hills are source of the Mzima Springs water that moves in underground streams to emerge at the mzima springs as crystal clear water.
The chyulu and Tsavo west national parks are the best parks for a Kenya scenic safari/vacation. The Kenya scenic tour in the chyulu involves game trekking through the glades with the occasional thrill of tracking the murderous black rhino. From the chyulu hills you descend into Tsavo west where evidence of recent volcanic activity abounds. The shetani lava flows and caves, the mzima springs, the seven sister hills and the Chaimu volcanic dust hill.
The Ngulia hill that form a lush backdrop to the Tsavo park are a visual enigma rising abruptly to 2000ft and starching to create a thick quiet and serene valleys at their feet. Vegetation in Tsavo West is very thick and wildlife can be harder to spot, but the scenic beauty of the park is beyond any experienced elsewhere.
