Goa is the smallest state of India and is situated in the Konkan region of India’s west coast. This rich tropical paradise is abundant in flora and fauna and has two districts – North and South Goa divided by the River Mandovi. Once a Portugal colony, Goa is now the beach capital of the nation. It has managed to retain a quaint colonial flavor that is very evident in its laidback hippy culture, sun kissed beaches, colossal forts and stunning churches.

Goa’s gorgeous churches are celebrated for their attractive architecture that usually combines two or more forms of construction. Whether it is the baroque style of architecture or the ornate altars and Gothic staircases. Most of the Goan churches we see today were built in Old Goa during the Portuguese subjugation of the state. Owing to its splendid churches, Old Goa is now a world heritage site.

Home to some of the most important churches in Asia, Goa is also an important place of pilgrimage for Asian Christians. In fact, Goa’s population is largely made up of Christians and Konkanis, who form the composite culture of this idyllic paradise. The most important church in Goa is the Basilica of Bom Jesus. This church housing the tomb of St Francis Xavier is the most visited Goan church and is located in Old Goa. The Church Of St Francis Of Assisi boasts of an interesting history and architecture. This church is also located in Old Goa.

Goa’s capital city of Panjim (also known as Panaji) is home to what is claimed to be Asia’s largest church. It is called the Se Cathedral and is dedicated to St. Catherine. Designed by engineers Julio Simao and Ambrosio Arguero, the church took almost three-fourth of a century for the construction to be finished off. This Goan church is made in the shape of a cross. Another Goan church of significance here is the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. It is a reckoned landmark in Panjim.

Some of Goa’s other outstanding attractions are its scenic beauty, sandy beaches, sparkling waters, adventure sports, temples, scrumptious cuisine, warm and hospitable people and a rich cultural tapestry.
