This is mainly because during the cold war the eastern part of Europe was heavily under Soviet influence which made the countries of this area being commonly dubbed as communist block and was not easily accessible to foreigners. With the downfall of USSR and the disintegration of the Communist block these countries became much more liberal and thus allowing the foreign travellers to visit those countries.

Travelling to Eastern Europe is an altogether different experience. As a result of it's proximity to Asia this region has developed a perfect combination of European and oriental culture that is unique to this region.
