Are you planning a trip to France? If you’re flying in from outside of Europe, you’ll very likely arrive at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport (airport code: CDG). Be aware though that Paris has two major airports; the other is Orly (airport code: ORY).

When you first arrive from a long, intercontinental flight, one of the last things you want to have to deal with is how you’re getting to your hotel or wherever you’re staying. Below there are suggestions on how to get to and from CDG to central Paris. NOTE: If your plans are to immediately leave Paris by train for another destination in France, you should know that there is a train station directly at that airport, so there’s no need to go into central Paris to catch your train elsewhere.

France Travel

For those staying in Paris however, there are essentially 4 different ways to travel to/from the CDG Airport and downtown Paris:

Taxi: the fare is about with a 15% supplement added on evenings (7pm-7am), Sundays and holidays. There may also be an additional fee for numerous or oversized bags. Allow at least 1 hour for the journey. If you’re taking a taxi to the airport, be sure to call ahead to schedule it to pick you up at a predetermined time and place. You may have difficulty simply walking out to the curb and hailing a cab.
Door to Door Shuttle: This is a shared shuttle service that costs about per person. You can book online at: www.supershuttle.fr (english version) or call +33.(0)1.43.65.55.55. Be sure to book in advance and also mention if you have any large or excessive number of bags (fees may apply). Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for this trip. When booking, the company will tell you when you need to be picked up in order to arrive at the airport on time.
Air France Motor Coach: Air France provides bus service from select locations in Paris to CDG Airport. Buses leave about every 30 minutes with fares ranging from -30. Tickets can be purchased from the driver, when you board the bus. Allow 1-2 hours for the journey. www.cars-airfrance.com (english version)
Subway / Light Rail: Labeled “RER” Line B, there is a metro/subway stop at CDG Airport that connects with the main metro system in central Paris. To/From the airport, the fare will cost approximately and take 30 – 40 minutes. While the fastest and least expensive way to get to/from the airport, it is not recommended if you are traveling with many bags, since the trains may be crowded and there are frequently no escalators or elevators between the metro platforms and the station entrances. This means you would have to carry your luggage up/down many flights of stairs.

Ever since the tragic events of 9-11, airlines have stepped up security in order to protect their passengers and give them comfort and ease when flying. If you have not flown recently, you should be aware of the rules regarding bringing liquids on flights.

The 3-1-1 Rule

Flights Booking

TSA has established strict policies about the quantity of toothpaste, bottled water, and other liquid and gel items permitted in carry-on luggage. Travelers boarding cheap flights are allowed to bring on board liquids with a capacity of 100ml / 100 grams or less, which can fit into one clear re-sealable plastic bag with a capacity of no more than 1 liter. One bag per passenger is permitted. Ditch the drink if there is more than 100ml in the container.

Liquids and Gels in Carry-Ons

Liquids and Gels can be carried on but only in limited quantities. Liquids and gels must be in individual containers of three ounces or less and placed inside a clear plastic bag. The TSA stresses that “containers should fit comfortably into your bag, and that only one bag is permitted per passenger.” If you are bringing more than three ounces of any liquid or gel such as shampoo, it should go into your checked luggage. The TSA does not require that liquids and gels be kept in their original labeled containers, although doing so may help speed up the screening procedure.

Prescription Medications, Baby Formula, and Milk

You have to declare prescription medications, baby formula, and milk at the security checkpoint. You can carry more than three ounces without being placed in a plastic bag. The TSA recommends but does not require that prescription medications be in their original labeled containers. The TSA can also make exceptions for other medicines such as eye drops, contact lens solution, and insulin. The TSA recommends keeping vitamins in their original labeled containers, but does not mandate doing so. You are allowed to bring more than 100ml of the following: baby formula, baby food, milk or juice (as long as you have an infant less than two years of age with you!), prescription and essential non-prescription medicines. You must declare all such items at security screening and additional screening may be required.

Makeup

Makeup such as liquid mascara, lip gels, or other liquid makeup items, has to be placed in a plastic bag in three-ounce or smaller containers. Lipstick, powders, and solid lip balms are not subject to the rules and can be transported in carry-on bags.

Taking Food for the Flight?

Solid food is permitted in both checked and carry-on baggage. All liquid food in your carry-on (for example, yogurt, pudding or jam) must be in containers of 100ml or less. All containers must fit in the same clear, closed, re-sealable 1 liter plastic bag as all other containers of liquids, aerosols or gels you are carrying. Any containers over 100ml should be placed in checked baggage.

Can I bring dry ice? A Snow Globe? Or, Piñatas? The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority website has an extensive list of what is allowed and what is not. Dry ice and snow globes get a yes. Piñatas, sadly, are a no.

At the Screening Checkpoint, take your plastic bag out of your carry-on luggage and place it in one of the provided trays.

It is more important than ever to follow airline guidelines. Savvy travelers know that the fastest way to get through airport security is to travel light and to remember the rules on carrying liquids.

What Are the Rules Regarding Bringing Liquids on Flights?

Cheapflights is all about providing fast and easy-to-use services to help you find cheap last minute flights and flights to London online. Easily look at price comparisons for airline tickets.

Expedia is the largest among all Internet-based travel sites all over the World Wide Web. Its user friendly design and navigations enable even those who are not that Internet savvy to book a flight without any hassle at all. First time website visitors will never get lost with the simple and spontaneous navigation links, as well as with the clearly laid out discount travel package links and flight and hotel information available. And because navigations are clearly labeled, website visitors will never have to guess where the link will bring them to. Furthermore, Expedia’s website is always accessible so people won’t have a problem about getting updated all the time. The page loading speed is also quite fast and this works great for people who can’t afford to waste their time.

Aside from offering the best and the cheapest travel deals in town, booking flights online through Expedia comes with a number of useful benefits.

Flights Booking

•Expedia has handy traveler tools consumers can use.

With Expedia’s Traveller Tools, consumers will be able to plan their trip easily and quickly. The website actually features a number of applications, as well as share tips that could really save travelers a lot of time and effort. One example of these tools is the Expedia’s Currency Converter, which is accessible by click from the Traveller Tools page. With its help, there is no need for researchers to load up Yahoo’s currency converter in order to calculate and compare currencies. Another one is the Airport Guide, which provides travelers access to pertinent information regarding the facilities and amenities of more than 65 airports around the globe.

Signing up to receive travel deals via E-mail and RSS are two more examples of the Traveller Tools consumers can avail of. By using these, the traveler is provided the opportunity to be the first one to avail of the latest sales, discount travel packages, and promotions, in addition to a variety of money-saving travel tips. Expedia Traveller Tools are really beneficial to any type of travelers, whether novice or experienced; short term or long term. If anything, these tools make planning fast and effortless.

•Expedia features destination reviews, information and recommendations

Expedia’s Destinations page acquaints clients to their chosen vacation spot through photos posted by previous travelers. This particular page on the site also showcases traveler reviews on hotels, restaurants, and destination hot spots. With this knowledge, consumers will be able to fully coordinate their priorities. They will also be able to maximize their vacation time as they are already oriented to the things they can expect from the destination; the activities they can engage in; and the scenic spots they can visit.

•Expedia provides big savings

With more than a decade of offering cheap travel deals to consumers, the company has been dubbed as the most budget-friendly travel agency in the world. As such, it has collected a huge following of consumers who find their wide array of discount coupons refreshing and helpful. By virtue of its products and services, some travelers now consider Expedia and savings synonymous terms. Expedia is the only site from which people can get quality discounted travel packages to an assortment of destinations. Leisure and business travelers alike would be happy to know that the site is continuously updating their offers in Find Savings’ online site (an online coupon portal that markets all Expedia’s hot travel deals and promotions).

Expedia coupons can be used for a variety of things, including the purchase of great travel deals, making hotel reservations and even car rental bookings. On the other hand, consumers should take note that these coupons are only applicable on online transactions since printable coupons are not yet available.

Expedia’s website is indeed worth the time to visit, especially if you are planning for a big trip in the future. The website is so convenient and full of useful resources after all. With Expedia, consumers would no longer need to jump from one site to another just to plan the perfect vacation escapade.

These are simply listed in point format to make it easier for you to read right through to the end. Of all the reviews I’ve written online these are my major points to consider.

Book in advance

Flights Booking

The best way to find a cheap flight is by booking early. Do not wait until the last minute or else you will be charged “last minute” fees, which are normally exorbitant. The earlier you book the better. Try 10 weeks in advance if you can.

Travel midweek

The best time to travel is midweek. That is, from Monday to Thursday. After this it can get really costly. I mean the weekends are considered peak time since everyone is traveling – if you want to fly cheap to SA, avoid weekend flights.

Book indirect flights

One thing is certain – direct flights are pricey. This comes with the convenience of direct flying. If you are looking for the cheapest flight then do not even think about direct flights.

Travel in winter

If you ever compared flights in summer and winter then you’d know that winter prices are cheaper. This is because winter is considered off peak in South Africa i.e. midyear since we are in the Southern Hemisphere.

Travel at night

Actually most of the flights are night flights. However there are also day-flights, which you must avoid if you want to fly cheap. However, it is always best to compare these flights just incase there is a discount being offered by the day-flights.

 Tips to Find Cheap Flights

Use portals to find packages

One of the easiest ways to find cheap flights to South Africa is by using flight portals. There are some very good South Africa flights websites or portals online, which I highly recommend. These allow you to compare across a number of airlines, times of the day, week and year.

My best place is Travelstart and flightssouthafrica.net,

Find them at http://www.flightssouthafrica.net

So you are about to set off on the trip of a lifetime to one of the most-loved countries in the world — France! You have been practicing your ‘bonjours’ and your ‘mercis’, and studying maps of Paris to work out how to get around, but there is one more thing you can do to make sure your trip is extra special. And that is to immerse yourself in French life by reading some books set in France.

Reading novels set in Paris or the French countryside will give you an insight into the country which is impossible to get from the guide books. As the characters walk along the Seine or drink their coffee at a table on the Parisian pavement, it will fill you with anticipation to do the same — making the experience so much sweeter when you finally get to do it yourself. If the novel is set in the past, you will have more appreciation for France’s history, bringing many of the places and old buildings alive when you visit them on your trip. And if the novel is set in the present day, there’s nothing more fun than trying to find the streets, bars and restaurants that might be mentioned in the story.

France Travel

So what books should you read? Here is a selection of five novels which do a great job in bringing France to life, even before you set foot on that plane.

‘Foreign Tongue’ by Vanina Marsot

Nursing a broken heart, Anna moves to Paris from Los Angeles. She begins working as the translator of a cryptic erotic novel and of course, finds herself some romance. The book is a love-letter to the city, with plenty of wanderings through the streets as well as descriptions of French life, food and cafes.

‘The Coral Thief’ by Rebecca Stott

History, mystery, romance and intrigue intertwine in this novel set in post-Napoleonic Paris. It is 1815 and a young Englishman travels to Paris to take up a position at the renowned Jardin des Plantes. But when the collection of rare coral specimens he is carrying is stolen by a beautiful woman, he is drawn into a plot involving revolutionaries, spies and the intelligentsia. Victorian Paris comes alive in this novel, which will surely enhance any present day visit to the Jardin des Plantes, France’s main botanical garden.

‘Luncheon of the Boating Party’ by Susan Vreeland

Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s ‘Luncheon of the Boating Party’ is a famous painting depicting a group of Parisians enjoying lunch on the terrace of a restaurant on the Seine. In this novel Vreeland tells the story of those in the painting and how they came to be there. It is a glorious look at Paris at the time of the Impressionists, and you can still eat at the restaurant itself today.

‘Five Quarters of the Orange’ by Joanne Harris

Now we move out of Paris and into the Loire Valley with this novel by Harris that takes us to a village occupied by the Germans in WWII. The book moves between WWII and the present day, giving us an insight into the long-term effects the Nazi occupation had on the French people. And as it is a book by Joanne Harris, there is a of course lots of time spent exploring French food!

‘The Matchmaker of Perigord’ by Julia Stuart

We finish up with something fun and quirky, in a fictional village in France’s south-west. Amour-Sur-Belle might not be a real place, but it gives a taste of some of the declining villages of rural France. Here, the town barber decides to reinvent himself as a match-maker, quite a task when there are only 33 residents to match up. Filled with delightful characters and semi-ridiculous situations, this novel should just leave you giggling and enjoying the French temperament.

So if you have your tickets booked for Charles de Gaulle airport or you just WISH you had a holiday planned for France, try the books above to immerse yourself in a bit of French life and culture. And if you find yourself enjoying them…well, there’s plenty more to explore…Bon Voyage!

Books Set in France – Five Novels to Read Before You Travel

Suzi Butcher is the editor of http://www.packabook.com which makes it easy to find novels set in particular locations. This is a just a taste of the novels she recommends — visit books set in France for many more.
